Micro Project 4

I chose the laundry room in my apartment for this assignment. I go to laundry room to do my laundry. I always choose the dryer, which is operating in the video, if it is available, because only that one works well. Other ones suck. They do not dry my clothes at all!!
Sometimes I buy the laundry detergent from the vending machine in the laundry room, if I run out of mine. If I close my eyes, I would know I am in the laundry room when I hear the sounds that the dryers make, and the sounds of the water in the washers.

Response to Carver's Cathedral

I enjoyed reading this article about a blind man in Carver’s article, Cathedral. I think this is a good story, and I was motivated after I read this article. Even he could not see he does not give up his life. The narrator and the blind man, Robert, are very different man. The husband in the story has a negative personality while Robert has compassion and gentle. The blind man visited the couple’s house. The husband was hostile to the blind man at first, but he changes the attitude toward Robert gradually. At he end of the story, the narrator has a life-changing moment while he was trying to tell Robert what a cathedral looks like by holding Robert’s hand to draw.
I do not like the husband in the article. He was rude and mean to the blind man. I do not think there are differences between people with disabilities and the healthy people. We should treat the handicapped people politely. They conquer more difficulties than healthy people to live their lives.

Response to Wallace's article

After reading the commencement speech that David Foster Wallace gave, I believe this is one of the best speeches I have ever read or listened. I love the way his opening story. It sounds like a normal story with “banal platitude”, but this is a good lesson for “young fish”.  Followed by stories that he tells, a very intelligent idea has been mentioned, “learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what to think.” How to think is not the most important thing we have to learn, but what to think is. Everyone in the world has his or her own way of thinking, so no one could say what is the perfect way of thinking for everyone. People should focus on what to think. A student better thinks about how to learn more things in an efficient way, instead of thinking about to make more money. Once a people find a right thing to think about, he or she is not far away from finding the right method of thinking.  He uses the shopping at the supermarket story to tell us the way of thinking. People can’t judge one thing based on what they saw, but should be based on truth.  I totally agree with him, we should see things in many points of view, not only from the positive side, but also the negative side.

The only thing that I don’t like about this speech is that speaker does not mention how to control our thoughts. Even though he mentions that the good education could help people to find what to think, but he fails to present any suggestions to those people who does not have such good education like graduate from Kenyon College. Overall, I enjoy reading this article.

Wexner Center Visit – Annie Leibovitz

This was my first time to go to Wexner Center, and I really enjoyed this experience. I went there at 12:30pm, so there were not many people, so it's quiet. I could look at every photograph carefully without other people’s interference.

I like Leibovitz put the famous figures in the middle of the photo. Some of them look realistic and some look very  dark and sad.

One of my favorite photographs is Mick Jagger singing with a wide-open mouth and holding a microphone. He looks very thin, and wild in the picture. I think this photo is very real. Leibovitz captured the moment that a famous rock star singing with all his emotions and energy.

The other one is Yoko Ono. She looks sad in the picture. In the photo, she closes her eyes, and it looks like there are some tears on her face. It is my personal belief that she really loved her husband, and she missed him. Yoko’s emotion was totally expressed by Leibovitz’s photo. There is not exaggeratedly sad face in the image, but it still shows a lot of emotions in the picture.

One or two words: Swipe

Purse – I put cash, credit cards, and buck ID in my purse, so I use it several times throughout the day.

One or two words: Money

The final image I made by photoshop describes my everyday life. I put the Macbook air at the center of the image, because it is the most important thing in my life, and it is the biggest object in my backpack. I use my Macbook air in every class. I put three I Phones in the image, because I use it a lot. I use it when I am eating alone, and when I am waiting for bus. My I Phone connects me with the world. I put the Starbucks at the bottom left, because I hold the coffee with my left hand, and hold my I Phone with my right hand when I walk on the street. I put the planner at the bottom right. I use my planner when I need to check my schedules. I put my Buck ID and my purse on the top, because they are associated with money. I have my debit cards and cash in my purse, and I put some money in my Buck ID.
