Big Ideas and Artmaking
After I read of this article, I
learned about the importance of “big idea” to an artist. The article is very
organized. The author explains how big ideas relate to art making. He suggests
that personal interest plays an important role in an artist’s choice of ideas.
The article also mentions that the difference between themes and big ideas.,
and subject matter and big ideas.
Basically, I enjoyed reading
this article, but it is still hard for me to understand the difference between an
artist’s big ideas and the themes and also the difference between an artist’s
bog ideas and subject matter. Also, I think following a big idea may be one
thing to limit an artist.
Interpreting Connotations in
Visual Culture
In Barrett article, I like the
part that he analyzes many different connotations and denotations and how
differently students see it. He uses the Rolling Stone magazine cover as an
example of connoted image and linguistic message in the article. This example
is easy to understand for me. He provides some new ways of seeing magazine
covers, commercials, and posters, which I had never thought about. I like how
Barrett goes through by age group and look at how they view different things
with different connotations.
It is very hard for me to get
into this article. I felt it goes through a lot of different ideas and does not
stick to one main point. The author moves from one idea to another pretty fast
to me. I had to read some parts of the article three times to really understand
what he was trying to say.
